Biola University Graduation

We had the pleasure of attending the graduation of our neice, from Biola University in La Mirada on Saturday. It is the 100th anniversary of Biola University, making it a special ceremony.

The ceremony was actually quite good, and the speaker challenged the grads on seven words: Grace, Love, some others, but the one I remember was "Failure." He reminded them that life is full of failure. He spoke of a failure in his own life that God used for good. That resonated with me, as it seems so often I live trying to avoid failure (not that that's a bad thing in and of itself) but an unhealthy preoccupation with dodging the bullets of life is to be consumed with avoiding the very things that can make our lives more meaningful, useful and purposeful. It was a great speech.

Following the graduation, we hosted family and Claire's friends at our home for a celebration. Here are some images from the day, with a lean toward the details.

A Couple of Photo Projects

I spent the good part of 9 hours today putting together a 52-page "yearbook" for the 2009 King Track and Field banquet. It's a labor of love, I guess, as I get to live out the fantasy I had before deciding on teaching to go into journalism and work for a magazine.

This book is the 20th I've done while at King.

Along the way of compiling the story and statistics of the season, I got to play around a bit in Photoshop with some images, two of which are below. The raised hands will actually have text on it and serve as the cover of the program, the next is the back cover.

My wife and the mother of our daughter! How blessed am I?

Track and Field

In my "day job" I am one of the track coaches at the school where I teach. We're hosting the league finals this week, so during the competition I snuck away quickly to compose a shot of the runners on the "track" at a slightly different view from the "field". Not a usual thing to have roses blooming near a track, but it made for a fun image.

More images from the track meet to come. Check back!
